Illustrative example
  1. The opening line names years, model types and the business domain, so a hiring manager sees at a glance whether you fit.

    Summary examples
  2. The skills line uses the exact terms postings use ("causal inference," not "advanced stats"), so it clears ATS filters and gives the reader a quick stack check.

    Keywords and skills
  3. The bullet pairs a model metric with its baseline and a dollar outcome, which answers "better than what, and so what?" before anyone has to ask.

    Bullet points
  4. It shows the model left the notebook, the line many hiring managers draw between analyst and data scientist work.

    Common mistakes
  5. A dated, cloud-specific certification signals a production stack without crowding out the degree.

What hiring managers look for in a Data Scientist

Impact on a decision, not just a model score

An AUC means little without a baseline and a business outcome. Show what the model replaced and what changed: spend, conversion, losses, hours saved.

Statistical judgment

Experimentation roles ask for power analysis and quasi-experimental methods such as difference-in-differences. Show you pick methods on purpose and know when a correlation isn't a cause.

Work that shipped

Data scientists frame the question, build and validate the model, and get it into a decision or pipeline. Show which part you owned.

SQL and messy-data fluency

Healthcare and finance roles expect experience with their own data (claims codes, bureau data, transaction logs). Name the data you've actually worked with.

Communication with nontechnical partners

BLS lists explaining results to nontechnical audiences as part of the job. Bullets that name who acted on your work prove this better than "strong communicator."

Professional summary examples

Entry level

Recent M.S. Applied Statistics graduate with a 7-month data science internship at a regional health insurer, where a readmission-risk model built in Python and scikit-learn was adopted by the care-management team. Writes production SQL against claims tables, validates models with stratified cross-validation, and explains results to nonclinical staff.

Why it works: It replaces "eager to learn" with a model real users adopted and names the claims data healthcare screeners look for.

Mid level

Data scientist with 5 years in e-commerce experimentation and demand forecasting. Owns test design end to end, from power analysis to executive readout, and has shipped LightGBM forecasts that drive weekly replenishment decisions. Works daily in Python, SQL, PySpark and Databricks.

Why it works: It shows end-to-end ownership and a model in production, which separate mid level from entry level.

Senior

Senior data scientist with 9 years in consumer lending, leading a 6-person team that builds credit and fraud models under bank model risk governance. Set the validation and monitoring standards now used across 14 production models, and partners with risk and product leaders on model-driven policy changes.

Why it works: Team size, governance and standards others adopted show senior scope; tools are left out because they're assumed at this level.

Work experience bullet points

Entry level: modeling

WeakWorked on a customer churn prediction project.

StrongBuilt a gradient-boosted churn classifier in Python on 1.2M subscriber records, lifting recall at fixed precision from 0.44 to 0.61 over the existing logistic regression baseline.

What changed: It adds the method, the data size and a before-and-after metric.

Entry level: feature engineering

WeakCleaned and analyzed data using SQL and Python.

StrongBuilt 37 SQL views that mapped ICD-10 and CPT codes from three claims sources into comorbidity features for the readmission model, cutting monthly retraining prep from two days to about four hours.

What changed: It names the domain data and ties cleaning to the model it fed.

Mid level: experimentation

WeakRan A/B tests for the product team.

StrongDesigned and analyzed 23 checkout experiments in 2025, including power analysis and sequential stopping rules; four shipped variants added an estimated 2.7% to conversion, confirmed against a 5% long-term holdout.

What changed: It shows volume, rigor and validated impact rather than activity.

Mid level: forecasting

WeakResponsible for demand forecasting models.

StrongReplaced a seasonal-naive baseline with a hierarchical LightGBM forecast for 4,260 SKUs, reducing weighted MAPE from 31.4% to 22.8% and cutting pilot-store stockouts by 17%.

What changed: "Responsible for" became a specific model, a named error metric and an operational result.

Mid level: deployment

WeakDeployed machine learning models to production.

StrongPackaged a fraud-scoring model with Docker and MLflow and served it behind a real-time API at 38 ms p95 latency, flagging $1.9M in fraudulent transactions in two quarters at a 0.6% false-positive rate.

What changed: It proves production ownership with latency, catch value and the false-positive tradeoff.

Mid to senior: causal inference

WeakUsed causal inference to measure marketing impact.

StrongEstimated a regional TV campaign's incremental lift with a synthetic-control model when randomization wasn't possible, showing 58% of attributed sales were baseline demand and shifting $2.4M of the next year's budget.

What changed: It names the method, explains why it was chosen and ties the result to a budget decision.

Senior: leadership and governance

WeakLed a team of data scientists.

StrongLed 5 data scientists and 2 ML engineers delivering the pricing and risk models behind a $340M auto-loan portfolio; introduced a shared validation checklist that cut model review cycles from 11 weeks to 6.

What changed: It shows team size, business scale and a process improvement others depend on.

Senior: LLM evaluation

WeakBuilt LLM tools for the support team.

StrongSet the evaluation framework for a retrieval-augmented support assistant, combining 1,184 human-labeled answers with automated faithfulness checks; approved launch only after hallucination rate fell from 9.2% to 2.1%, and the assistant now deflects 18% of tier-1 tickets.

What changed: It frames senior LLM work as setting quality bars and launch criteria, not just calling an API.

Certifications and education

What's expected

BLS lists a bachelor's in mathematics, statistics, computer science or a related field as the typical entry-level education, and notes that some employers require or prefer a master's or doctorate. BLS lists no license for this occupation. Certifications are optional and rarely substitute for a quantitative degree or shipped work.

What gets noticed

A certification helps most when it matches the employer's stack. Current options include:

  • Google Cloud Professional Machine Learning Engineer
  • AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate
  • Microsoft Certified: Machine Learning Operations Engineer Associate (exam AI-300)
  • Databricks Certified Machine Learning Associate or Professional
  • INFORMS' Certified Analytics Professional at three levels (CAP-Essentials, CAP-Pro, CAP-Expert); aCAP is closed to new candidates

Two older credentials have retired: AWS Certified Machine Learning – Specialty (last exam March 31, 2026) and Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Scientist Associate (exam DP-100, retired June 1, 2026), which Microsoft replaced with AI-300. Neither exam can be taken now; if you hold either, list it with the year earned while it's active.

Where to place them

Entry-level candidates should put education near the top, with relevant coursework or a thesis. After two or more years, move it below experience. Senior candidates can shorten it to degree, school and year.

Listing one in progress

Write the full name followed by a status and date, such as AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer – Associate (in progress; exam scheduled Feb 2027). Only list it if you've scheduled or started it.

How to tailor your Data Scientist resume

Product analytics and experimentation (consumer tech, media, gaming)

Lead with
Experiments you designed and the product decisions they changed.
Emphasize
A/B testing, power analysis, causal inference, quasi-experimental methods, metric definition, SQL, PySpark.
Cut
Deep learning projects with no product link, and dashboard work unless you defined the metrics behind it.

Applied ML and AI products (ML platforms, LLM features)

Lead with
Models in production and how you evaluated and monitored them.
Emphasize
MLflow, Docker, Kubernetes, model monitoring, drift detection, LLM evaluation (faithfulness, hallucination rate), PyTorch, cloud ML platforms.
Cut
Ad hoc analyses and descriptive reporting.

Financial services (banks, card issuers, lenders, fintech)

Lead with
Credit, fraud or valuation models and how they passed validation.
Emphasize
Model risk management, model validation, documentation, explainability, fair lending, AWS SageMaker. Name the Federal Reserve guidance you worked under: SR 26-2 replaced SR 11-7 in April 2026, and postings may cite either.
Cut
Fast-iteration startup language that suggests you skip documentation.

Healthcare and life sciences (payers, providers, health tech)

Lead with
Work on claims, EHR or clinical data and the care or cost decision it supported.
Emphasize
Claims data, ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, FHIR, HL7, HIPAA, PHI handling, survival analysis, reproducibility.
Cut
Any patient-level detail, and consumer-growth metrics that don't translate to clinical or cost outcomes.

Common Data Scientist resume mistakes

  1. Reporting model metrics with no baseline

"Achieved 0.91 AUC" invites "compared with what?"

FixState the previous approach and the business effect, such as "up from 0.83 with the rules engine, cutting manual reviews 22%."

  2. Claiming causal impact from correlational work

"Increased revenue 12%" reads as overclaiming to a manager who runs experiments.

FixName how impact was measured (A/B test, holdout, diff-in-diff), or write "estimated" for a model projection.

  3. Hiding whether the work shipped

Bullets that end at "built a model" suggest it stayed in a notebook.

FixSay where it runs or who uses it, such as "scored nightly in Airflow."

  4. Leaning on tutorial datasets

Titanic, MNIST or Iris projects show you finished a course, not solved a problem.

FixUse messy real data and a question someone would pay to answer; drop tutorial projects once you have work experience.

  5. Listing retired or expired certifications as current

An undated AWS ML – Specialty or DP-100 suggests a stale resume.

FixAdd the year earned and remove credentials once they expire.

FAQ

Should my Data Scientist resume be one page or two?

One page suits most candidates with under about seven years of experience. Two pages are fine for senior candidates or PhDs; list only publications that relate to the job.

Do I need a master's degree to get hired?

Not always. BLS lists a bachelor's as the typical entry-level education, and O*NET's survey of workers was close to evenly split between "bachelor's required" and "master's required." Without a graduate degree, lead with shipped work and projects that show statistical depth.

I earned the AWS Machine Learning – Specialty or DP-100 before they retired. Should I keep them?

Yes, while they're active. AWS says the Specialty stays active for three years from the date you earned it. Microsoft keeps DP-100 active on your transcript until it expires but no longer renews it, so check the date on your Microsoft Learn profile. Remove either once it lapses.

How do I handle a gap in my data science career?

Show it with dates. If you did relevant work during it, such as coursework, open-source contributions or freelance analysis, list that as an entry with outcomes.

Should I list my security clearance for government or defense contractor roles?

Yes. Put the level and status near the top, such as "Active TS/SCI with CI polygraph," since many of these postings require an active clearance. Describe your work at an unclassified level, naming methods and tools rather than programs.
