What hiring managers look for in a Solutions Architect

Design judgment, not just delivery

Hiring managers want the decision you made, the alternatives you rejected and why. "Chose SQS buffering over synchronous calls to absorb traffic spikes" says more than three bullets that say "implemented."

Translation in both directions

Gathering system requirements from staff or clients and advising on project costs and design changes are core tasks of the job. Show that you can run a discovery session with business owners, then defend the design to engineers, security and finance.

Hands-on credibility

Postings consistently ask for experience designing and implementing distributed systems. If you wrote the Terraform or built the POC, say so.

Ownership of non-functional requirements

Security, reliability, performance and cost are where architects earn their title. Bullets should mention availability targets, RTO/RPO, latency, compliance outcomes or cloud spend, not just features shipped.

A clear fit for the type of SA role

Pre-sales, consulting and in-house architects share a title but are judged on different results.

Professional summary examples

Entry level (engineer moving into architecture)

Cloud engineer moving into solutions architecture after 2 years running AWS infrastructure for a regional healthcare network. Built reusable Terraform modules for 31 environments and co-authored the HIPAA-aligned network design for a new patient portal. AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate.

Why it works: It names real design contributions and the certification that signals intent, without claiming a title the candidate hasn't held.

Mid level (consulting/partner delivery)

Solutions Architect with 5 years designing Azure and hybrid workloads for financial services clients at a Microsoft partner. Runs discovery workshops, writes the design and the estimate, and stays through cutover. Most recent engagement moved a 64-application loan-servicing estate to Azure on schedule. Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert.

Why it works: It covers the full engagement lifecycle and the industry, which is what a consultancy staffing a project needs to know.

Senior (in-house platform leadership)

Principal Solutions Architect with 12 years in distributed systems and 6 setting architecture direction at a SaaS company with $410M in ARR. Owns the reference architectures, chairs the architecture review board and partners with product and finance on platform investment. Recent work includes a multi-region active-active redesign and a cost program that funded two new product lines.

Why it works: It shows organizational scope and business partnership, not a technology list.

Work experience bullet points

Entry level: migration support

WeakHelped with cloud migration project.

StrongMapped dependencies for 47 on-prem VMs with AWS Application Discovery Service and drafted the three-wave rehost/replatform plan the lead architect approved.

What changed: Specific scope, a named tool and a concrete artifact you owned, with honest credit to the lead.

Entry level: documentation

WeakCreated architecture diagrams.

StrongProduced current- and target-state diagrams plus a decision log for a claims-intake redesign, getting it through the architecture review board in one cycle instead of the usual two.

What changed: Diagrams are tied to a governance outcome, which is why architects make them.

Mid level: pre-sales

WeakSupported sales team with technical demos.

StrongBuilt and ran 11 proofs of concept for data-platform prospects; 8 reached a technical win, contributing to $2.3M in first-year ARR.

What changed: It uses the metrics pre-sales SAs are measured on: POC conversion, technical wins and influenced revenue.

Mid level: reliability

WeakResponsible for high availability of order system.

StrongRedesigned the order service for multi-AZ failover with Aurora and SQS buffering, raising measured availability from 99.5% to 99.95% and holding RPO under 90 seconds.

What changed: "Responsible for" became a design decision with before/after reliability numbers.

Mid level: cost

WeakReduced cloud costs.

StrongRightsized 318 EC2 instances and moved nightly batch jobs to Spot, lowering monthly AWS spend from $214K to $167K with no missed processing SLAs.

What changed: Method, scale, dollar impact and proof that nothing broke.

Senior: governance

WeakLed architecture standards for the company.

StrongChaired the architecture review board for 9 product teams and published 6 reference architectures, cutting median design-approval time from 5 weeks to 12 days.

What changed: Senior scope is shown through reach (9 teams) and a cycle-time outcome.

Senior: federal compliance

WeakWorked on FedRAMP compliance.

StrongArchitected the AWS GovCloud (US) authorization boundary for a SaaS platform and wrote the control inheritance mapping for 188 controls in the system security plan, supporting a FedRAMP Moderate authorization 14 months after kickoff.

What changed: It names the environment, the artifact and the result, in the language federal reviewers use.

Senior: strategy

WeakDrove cloud strategy.

StrongWrote the buy-vs-build analysis that consolidated three regional data platforms onto Azure, retiring $1.4M in annual licensing and winning CIO sign-off on a 20-month roadmap.

What changed: Strategy becomes a written deliverable with a financial result and an executive decision.

Certifications and education

What's expected

Many postings list a cloud architect certification as required or preferred. The usual baseline is AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate (exam SAA-C03; AWS certifications are valid for three years) or the Azure path below, and some government contractors make a certification a hard requirement. A bachelor's in computer science, information systems or engineering is common, though many postings accept equivalent experience instead.

What stands out

  • AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional. The exam changes from SAP-C02 to SAP-C03 on November 17, 2026; credentials earned on SAP-C02 stay active until their original expiration date.
  • Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, which requires passing exam AZ-305 and holding the Azure Administrator Associate certification (exam AZ-104)
  • Google Cloud Professional Cloud Architect: no prerequisites, but Google recommends 3+ years of industry experience including 1+ year designing and managing solutions on Google Cloud; valid two years
  • Specialty certifications that match the posting, such as AWS Certified Security – Specialty for security-heavy or federal roles
  • TOGAF Enterprise Architecture Practitioner (The Open Group) for enterprise architecture tracks at large organizations; it doesn't expire

Where to place them

Put Certifications below Experience. If you're entry level, changing careers, or the posting requires a certification, mention it in your summary too. Use the full official name, level and year earned, and confirm each credential is active. Microsoft role-based certifications, including the Azure Expert, expire after one year unless you pass a free online renewal assessment, and each one renews separately from its prerequisite. Federal candidates should put clearance level near the top.

How to list one in progress

Only list it if you've scheduled the exam or are actively studying. Write: AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional (exam scheduled March 2027). A year of "pursuing" reads as stalled.

How to tailor your Solutions Architect resume

Pre-sales at a cloud provider or SaaS vendor

Lead with
Technical wins, proofs of concept, customer workshops and the revenue metric the vendor tracks: ARR and win rate at SaaS companies, consumption or usage growth at cloud providers.
Emphasize
Discovery, solution design, POC, technical win, ARR, win rate, customer-facing, whiteboarding, executive briefings, the vendor's own product names.
Cut
On-call rotations, ticket counts and long lists of tools the vendor doesn't use.

Enterprise in-house (banking, insurance, healthcare)

Lead with
Governance, alignment with enterprise architecture standards, regulatory outcomes and multi-year roadmaps.
Emphasize
Architecture review board, enterprise architecture, TOGAF, buy-vs-build, technical debt, HIPAA or PCI DSS, event-driven integration, legacy modernization.
Cut
Sales metrics and quota language, which suggest you'll leave for a vendor role.

Consulting firms and systems integrators

Lead with
Engagements delivered, client variety and your role in scoping and estimating.
Emphasize
Statement of work (SOW), estimation, migration waves, landing zone, application modernization, multi-cloud, client stakeholder management.
Cut
Internal tool names that won't mean anything to the next client.

Federal and public sector contractors

Lead with
Clearance level, compliance outcomes and government cloud experience.
Emphasize
FedRAMP, NIST SP 800-53, NIST RMF, ATO, AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, Zero Trust, proposal and orals support.
Cut
Anything classified or program-specific you're not authorized to share. Describe the mission and scale instead.

Common Solutions Architect resume mistakes

  1. Reading like an engineer's resume

Bullets about building and configuring make you look like an implementer, not an architect.

FixFor your two or three biggest projects, state the decision, the alternatives and the reason you chose one.

  2. Listing every cloud service you've touched

Forty AWS service names signal breadth without judgment.

FixGroup skills by capability (networking, security, data, IaC) and name only the services central to your designs.

  3. Designs without outcomes

"Designed a microservices architecture" says nothing about whether it worked.

FixAttach a metric architects own, such as availability, latency, cost, time to provision, audit findings or migration cutover time.

  4. Unbalanced depth and influence

Pre-sales candidates often hide technical depth; delivery architects hide stakeholder work.

FixGive every role at least one bullet of each: something you built and someone you influenced.

  5. Vague or outdated certifications

"AWS Certified" with no level, or a credential that expired two years ago, invites doubt during verification.

FixUse exact names, levels and years, drop expired credentials, and renew before you job hunt.

FAQ

How long should a Solutions Architect resume be?

Two pages is normal for mid-level and senior architects; with under five years of experience, aim for one. Either way, shrink older roles to a line or two.

Do I need a certification to get hired as a Solutions Architect?

It depends on the employer, but many postings list one as required or preferred, especially at cloud providers and their partners. If you have none, start with the AWS Associate or the Azure path. At senior level, the scope your bullets prove matters more.

Should I list the AWS Associate certification if I also hold the Professional?

List the Professional, since it's the higher credential. Earning the Professional automatically recertifies the Associate, so listing both adds little unless a posting names the Associate specifically.

I'm a software engineer or sysadmin moving into architecture. How should I position my resume?

Keep your real job titles, state the move in your summary, and pull forward every bullet where you made a design choice, wrote a design doc or presented to stakeholders.

Can I name the customers I worked with?

Only if they're public references or you have permission. Otherwise describe them by industry and size, such as "Fortune 500 insurer."
